This year has just been the year of elopements. I’m not sure what it is, whether it’s the changing political climate, economic changes, or that people are just gravitating towards a more simple, sweet style of wedding, but it seems that more and more people are opting to forego the big traditional wedding celebration. Instead, I’ve had dozens of couples recently choose to run off into the mountains together to promise each other forever, and it’s just the most magical thing. Tori and Jon planned their Black Balsam Elopement so it roughly followed a traditional wedding day, but with just the two of them to enjoy it all, privately. Alex Fisher of Lucky Penny Creative styled their mini reception perfectly, with lush florals from Flora (check out Tori’s amazing, and delicious, something blue tucked into her bouquet!), sweet doughnuts from Vortex, and a champagne toast with Biltmore bubbly. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect setup.
It was raining lightly when I arrived at Tori and Jon’s cabin to capture their getting ready photos. Jenna Wilson had styled Tori’s hair to perfection and Joanna Ferree of Powder Me Pretty was just finishing her makeup. The bride and groom dressed separately and then met each other in the garden for their sweet first look as the rain sprinkled around them. We then all headed up the mountain to Black Balsam Knob, where black clouds and fog threatened all afternoon, but we didn’t get a single drop of rain! Just gorgeous mist that turned the summit into something reminiscent of Scotland. After saying their vows, Tori and Jon had a first dance, all to themselves on the mountaintop, before popping their champagne and enjoying their doughnuts with a view! It was such a sweet, intimate day and I was so honored to have been a part of it. We spent the rest of the daylight taking portraits across the mountaintops and down in deep fir forests. As we wrapped up we got a final burst of golden sunset light and everything was literally perfect.
